John Dodds Specialists Answer SOS Call

In June 2011 the hit BBC TV Series DIY SOS was filming in Durham.

It wasn’t long into a regular recording when the DIY SOS team found a leak on their catering van. The van had to be closed down while a commercial catering engineer with the right qualifications for the job was sought.

George Martin of John Dodds Ltd took up the call and was dispatched to site where he soon discovered that both pipes, the supply pipe and pilot assembly pipe had split.

Colleague Ray Taylor was dispatched with replacement parts and within a couple of hours, the John Dodd’s Repair team had fixed the problem in time for lunch.

Both George and Ray got to meet the DIYSOS team including presenter Nick Knowles, regarding Nick as “a spot-on bloke”.

All of the Repair Team are GAS SAFE registered, they handle each and every Job with care and efficiency. If you have any repair work that needs to be carried out,

why not give us a call on 0191 482 11 22

REMEMBER

If you smell gas you must stop using all appliances and open windows to allow for ventilation until a Gas Safe registered member can attend to the scene.

John DoddsJohn Dodds 1925 - 2011

End of an era at John Dodds Ltd.

Ask anyone in the butcher’s trade or local restaurant who John Dodds is and they will be able to tell you! Having set up the Butchers Suppliers and then Catering Equipment suppliers over 45 years ago in Gateshead /Newcastle upon Tyne it is a well known company in the North East.

It is with great sadness that John, ‘JD’ to many passed away this May in Menorca aged 85 years.

John was born in Blaydon in 1925, he served in the RAF in Italy at the age of 18, which started his love of Italy and Italian food. On his return he worked in the butchery trade travelling all over the North east and Cumbria. In 1952 he married Muriel and had two sons Nigel and Trevor. Muriel and John set up business, first with a butchers in Denton Burn and quickly moved on to a butcher’s suppliers company.

John has always been known as a gentleman, he had many friends, local farmers, at the local Golf club in Whickham and through the Freemasons, with whom he had just celebrated 50 years as a Blackfriars Freemason.

He will be sadly missed by all his family, friends and staff at John Dodds Ltd, where his sons Trevor & Nigel and third generation grandson James continue the business he started.

Kilner Vacufresh Storage
It is reported that in the UK we are wasting 6.7 million tonnes of food each year, that is the equivalent of over £12bn worth of food and drink that could of have been consumed is thrown out every year by householders. According to the Guardian newspaper the cost of the avoidable food and drink waste is typically £480 per household per year – rising to around £680 a year for families with children.

One solution to help reduce the amount of fresh food we throw away is to keep it started in lockable vacuum storage systems.  This works by removing a percentage of the air in the container reducing the ability of some bacteria to breed whilst also slowing down the oxidisation process, keeping your food fresher for longer.

The Kilner Vacufresh storage system allows you to pump out the air by using the inbuilt pump and then to turn the pins on the top to mark the storage day and month so that you’re never again left wondering just how long you have had it in the fridge.

Various sizes are available in the range. Call us for more information.

Student Open Event 2009
John Dodds Ltd’s first showroom open event aimed squarely at students entering the catering industry was a great success. Over 30 catering and hospitality students were in attendance from local collages for a range of product demonstrations and talks ranging from refrigeration and combi ovens, to drain maintenance and gas interlock systems, the ice cream machine proved to be a particularly popular attraction amongst the students.

“Opening our showroom to educate and create relationships with the future decision makers and staff of the catering industry brings great excitement to our company”, stated Sophie Dunning the events key organiser. Angela Smith from Newcastle Collage commented “We are extremely grateful for this opportunity, my students have gained so much from this and we would like to continue working with you in the future”. We have committed to offering our services to educate the students on planning and design in their upcoming semester.

A second open evening aimed at local businesses and catering professionals was also held where again a range of products will be demonstrated and talks held by our expert sales staff and representatives of key manufacturers. The aim is to demonstrate not only our superior customer service and support but our industry expertise and product range.
